Williamsville, NY-Vixen, now consisting of only one original member Jan Kuehnemund on guitar, took to the stage Tuesday evening at Club Infinity with bassist Lynn Louise Lowrey, drummer Kat Kraft and singer Jenna Saz-Agero. Breathing new life into such Vixen staples as “How Much Love”, “Rev It Up”, “Cryin”, and “Love is a Killer,” the girls have gelled into a cohesive sisterhood of rock n’ roll combined with a touch of sensuality. “Live & Learn” is the title of their upcoming release, off which we heard several tracks, including “Little Voice” and “Love Song.” The new record definitely sustains a harder edge than past Vixen records and I’m sure fans will be anxious to hear the rest. The new incarnation of the band really seems to fit, though not into those 80’s spandex miniskirts so much at this point, but nevertheless, the band has progressed beyond the sugary tart-fest, if you will, to bring more thought-out and complex songs to the table.

Rounding out the set was “Edge of a Broken Heart” and an encore of “I Want You to Rock Me” that was purposely interrupted with a brief chorus of Queen’s “We Will Rock You.”
Supporting Vixen, was Enuff Znuff who have managed to maintain a steady tour itinerary while dabbling in multiple sides project all through the last two decades. “Fly High Michelle” and “New Thing,” the bands most well-known jingles, were the highlights of their set.

Super Mercado, a band out of Chicago Illinois, proved to be the surprise treat of the evening, and in my opinion, has the talent to break into the mainstream. Drummer Gregg Potter has got to be seen to be believed. This dude is just freakin’ nuts on the skins. He is “Animal” from the Muppets incarnate, without a doubt! Keep an eye out for an upcoming feature on the band in the near future.
The evening was kicked off courtesy of local ladies, Mystic Jayyd. Though, fairly new to the scene, these girls get better and better with each show they play. Their set showcases the bands creative and quality originals, which in this town, takes guts, ambition and passion! Along with Vixen, tonight we learned that CHICKS, can indeed, ROCK!

As always, support the ROCK and your local musicians whenever possible. Catch Mystic Jayyd at Club Infinity, Friday, June 16th when they open for Metalworks.
