Toronto, Ont.-Internationally renowned multi-platinum rockers The Scorpions brought a high energy set to the Molson Amphitheater to the delight of the 6,000 plus faithful fans in attendance. The Scorps opened up with “Hour 1” from their latest release “Humanity Hour 1” and then kicked into “Bad Boys Running Wild.” I haven’t seen the Scorpions since 1996 but they were the same old, no frills, kick you in the face rock band from Germany that they always have been. This is a good thing though. Most bands that have been around as long as the Scorpions have lost a step or two but the Scorpions proved otherwise to all on hand.

The current lineup worked well and now consists of three original members, Klaus Meine (singer), Rudolf Schenker (guitarist) and Matthias Jabs (guitarist) and additionally features James Kottak (drums) and Pawel Maciwoda (bass). During “The Zoo,” Klaus Meine took a bunch of drumsticks and randomly threw them out to the crowd. I’ve never seen this done before but the crowd always likes to receive stuff from the band so that is never a bad thing.

A couple of songs later, Rudolph played an acoustic piece entitled “Send Me An Angel.” Klaus titillated the crowd with his distinct vocal harmonies during the tune “Holiday” proving after all of these years he still has the pipes. On the bass solo, Pawel Maciwoda tapped into Rush’s 2112 and Metallica’s “Enter Sandman.” Guitarists Matthias Jabs and Rudolf Schenker switched leads all night and didn’t miss a beat! For the die-hard Scorpion fans, the band introduced some of the new stuff and also provided the casual Scorpions fan with the classics. So all in all everyone went home with smiles on their faces!
