The Blitz Bash bill featuring The Exies, Drowning Pool, Saliva and Buckcherry hit the college town of Columbus, Ohio last Saturday night to perform before a rowdy crowd of drunken rockers. Buckcherry, now well past a solid year of touring in support of their hit release “15,” has been covered at length here at Glam Metal, so in light of that, I’ll just say that, as always, they delivered their high octane set for all the dudes and “crazy bitches” (most of whom were busy crowd surfing anyways) and brought down the house with their song of the same name.

Catching the tail end of Drowning Pool’s set is worth a mention here too. These guys are chock full of piss and vinegar and got the crowd into a frenzy with their cover of Pantera’s “Cowboys from Hell,” an obvious tribute to the late Dimebag Darrell, that was followed by a patriotic moment as D.P. kicked it up a notch with their controversial number “Let the Bodies Hit the Floor,” where uniformed Marines (both men & women) took the stage to help out with the shouting of the chorus. In true rock audience fashion, the crowd responded by chanting U-S-A! U-S-A! as a heartfelt salute to our defenders of freedom as they exited the stage. As a tribute to one of their own fallen band mates, original vocalist, Dave Williams (who died of heart disease in 2002), new singer, Ryan McCombs, said a few poignant words and broke into “Tear Away” before finishing out their program with a snarling version of Billy Idol’s 80’s fist raiser “Rebel Yell,” for all of us “old schoolers.” Thanks Ryan!

Okay, on to the band of the hour, Saliva. First off, to watch Jon Montoya rip on that guitar and Dave Novotny throw down on the bass was worth the price of admission alone. Add in Josey Scott’s powerhouse vocals, and you’ve got yourselves a full blown rock show boys and girls. The naked boobies were bobbing (much to the delight of Gus, our friendly neighborhood photographer) as the band blasted into “Black Sheep.” As much as security seemed to be enjoying spraying anyone within 20 feet of the stage with water, they soon became far too busy trying to control the bodies that surfed repeatedly overhead, interspersed with airborne bottles of water and the occasional drunken nut that will hit the cement head first, yet, get up, smile, laugh and go back into the crowd and do it again.  As for my friends and me, we were content to enjoy the show comfortably from the side of the stage, pen in one hand, cocktail in the other. Following a cover of Pink Floyd’s “Another Brick in the Wall,” the band introduced one of my personal favorite Saliva tunes, ”Fuck All Y’all,” whose lyrics are a slam against greedy record industry types. This was the only song played off of the 2004 release “Survival of the Sickest,” which in my opinion is Saliva’s best to date. The 11-song set consisted of 4 songs from 2001’s “Every Six Seconds,” including the guttural goodie “Click, Click Boom.” Additionally, 4 new tunes from “Blood Stained Love Story”, featuring the current radio ballad, “Broken Sunday, ” plus a pair from the bands third record “Back Into Your System” were belted out in fine face-melting fashion. The cross section of tunes succeeded in driving home the bands talent and vigor for performing live. The crowd on hand ate it up & wanted more. Having 5 records now under their belt that possess a diversity of sound and styles, this is a band that is gonna stick around for a while, and I couldn’t be happier
