What is Rock and Roll Fantasy Camp you might ask? Well it’s your one chance to play with some of rowhite-line-dotcks’ most revered musicians. We at GlamMetal were given the privilege to cover this extraordinary event. The camp is becoming a more than once a year event as future shows are booked in Las Vegas in November and London, England in May 2008. Even though the camp was for four days with the concert on Monday, we covered only Saturday through Mondays show at B.B. Kings. The musicians who took part in N.Y.C. Rock and Roll Fantasy Camp were: Simon Kirke (Bad Company), Mark Hudson (Hudson Brothers), Alan White (Yes), Alan Hughes (Deep Purple, Black Sabbath), Corky Lang (Mountain), Spike Edney (Queen), Jane Wiedlin (Go-Go’s), Sandy Gennaro (Joan Jett), Gary Burr (Carole King), and Larry Oaks (Foreigner.) There were also special guest performances by Leslie West of Mountain, Mark Farner (Grand Funk Railroad) and the Letterman horn section. Other guests who stopped by the camp were Scott Ian of Anthrax and Paul Stanley of Kiss. Paul, who was the guest of honor, also took part in the final concert at B.B. Kings. He sang one song with each band and sang “I’m Your Captain” with Mark Farner and Bruce Kulick joining him on stage. It was exciting to see a jam at the end where many of the musicians played together on many songs including: “Our Lips Are Sealed,” “I Love Rock and Roll,” “Rollin Stone,” “Superstition,” “Hard Days Night,” “Alright Now,” “Long Tall Sally,” “We Will Rock You,” and “Instant Karma.” Each musician sang one or two songs and it was all improvised. I must admit, this was the best part of the experience for me.

During our three day coverage, me and my assistant Jim got to walk around and check out Simon Kirke’s drum clinic, Mark Farner’s guitar clinic, and Bruce Kulick and Paul Stanley’s Q&A session. We also got to follow Scott Ian around room to room to watch him jam with the campers and talk to Jane Wiedlin about her band. In addition to all of these activities, we caught Mark Farner due a jam with Glen Hughes and play some of the old Grand Funk Railroad classics.

I talked to a couple of the campers who participated in the event. Kristina Johnson who came from Chicago, Illinois was there with her mother, brother and his girlfriend. Her father took part in three of the past camps and she decided that she wanted to do it as well. She had Sandy Gennaro as her counselor and was she was very pleased with results. Kristina commented, “He made the experience amazing! He pushed us all extremely hard. He kept it rigid but in a good way!” I also asked Kristina who she was looking forward to performing with. She said she was really excited to be performing “Strutter” with Paul Stanley. The results were great as the band had a great time and they really played their hearts out. What a great experience for her! I also talked to a Geoff Tupelock from St. Louis, Missouri. He really wanted to win through VH1 but submitted entries too late. So his mother 10 days before the camp started surprised him with this gift. Geoff is a huge Kiss fan and was sporting a Vinnie Vincent shirt when I was taking to him. Geoff liked rehearsing with Paul Stanley on “Rock and Roll All Nite.” He stated that recording at Sirius studio was his most pleasing experience. “It was really cool to record at Sirius. I was the most excited to record our original song “Rock an Roll Fantasy.” “It’s my favorite song that we will be playing!”

David Fishof had put together quite a bit of experience for the participants. Everyone we have met and spoke to seemed very pleased with the whole camp experience. I personally think that the camp would not have been as successful without his hard working staff to make sure the camp went on without a hitch. All of our media requests were granted and interviews were completed. We want to personally thank Allison Farber, Rebecca Sullivan, Elizabeth Vargas, Courtney McGraw, and of course David Fishof for allowing the site and giving future invites to cover upcoming camps as they occur.

Editor’s note: Besides the amazing Paul Stanley interview, we also will have three more amazing interviews coming over the next couple of weeks!!!
