As most people know, since Jani Lane left Warrant a few years back to focus on his solo career, he's been keeping quite busy indeed. Aside from writing and recording his solo album titled "Back Down To One," the vocalist/songwriter has been out on a couple of package tours, such as the "Bad Boy's Of Metal" tour, and the VH1 " Metal Mania-Stripped Across America" tour, and he's worked and recorded on some tribute albums as well. Also, since disbanding from Warrant, Jani has had a few talented musicians backing him from time to time, but nothing like the band that's currently touring with him now!
That right! Jani Lane's Warrant is about as tight as a band can get, and these guys bring it on with a vengeance! Jani and his band literally will make a small club feel like an arena show, and leave the audience in awe! They leave Jani himself in awe every single night, and you can see that he's really digging this band! So... in no particular order, this kick ass didn’t is, Shawn Zavodney, keys and vocals. Daniel Conway (D.C) or as most people know him, D.Animal on drums. Chad Macdonald on bass guitar, and last but not least, guitar prodigy Dario Lorina!
We at GlamMetal.com thought it would be a great follow-up to the recent Jani Lane Interview and the Pittsburgh show review, as well as finding out what drives these great musicians, and get somewhat of a perspective on what it's like touring with Jani Lane, and playing together as a band, etc... I've personally met and talked with all of these guys, and they are by far the coolest bunch of Rock N' Roll Animals you'd ever wanna meet! We're happy as hell to have this exclusive interview with Jani Lane's Warrant! I have asked each of the members a few questions, got great answers back. I hope you dig it as much as I did. Enjoy! Concert photos by Lyn Sou Shawn Zavodney-Keys and Backing vocals Shawn, You've been with Jani and Warrant for some time now. How long have you been playing with Jani, and would you mind taking us back to how and when it all began for you? So many people have asked about the Warrant and Jani Lane connection so here goes. It all started way back in 1990. Lane was producing a band I was in called "Slammin Gladys" with Dave Brooks. I ended up doing some shows with them in 91. There a few snap shots in my slide show on the main page. We became good friends; I guess we had a lot in common. Those who think he is a bad guy.... he fully furnished an apartment of mine in L.A. the first week I met him with much stuff out of his own home. That is the true Jani Lane and it is how he has been ever since I have known him. That is also why I make so many comments about his cloths and what not, whenever he decides to get a new wardrobe or goes shopping he ALWAYS hooks me up with some new stuff too. I guess this is a good spot to thank "VH1 Celebrity Fit Club 2" for the most recent stuff. "Slammin Gladys" didn’t get much of a response and the label dropped the band after a short while. Jani urged me to stay out west but I headed back to Ohio and pursued a teaching degree. About 2 months after I left "Cherry Pie" hit, and BIG! What timing, I thought to myself and wondered what might have been. Little did I know it didn’t matter and that I would in the future still have a part in it all. When Jani moved back to Ohio, I immediately weaseled my way into the "Back Down To One" project in 2000.... After the solo cd was complete, he asked me to join up with him, E-rock and Jerry to do some Warrant touring. I was teaching at the time but decided to head on out with him again! Great move, because I haven’t stopped doing it yet. Every summer we have something new and exciting to do together, and I have been able to keep teaching. He has worked many things out around my teaching schedule and has shelled out plenty of extra at times to fly me in separate to make different shows throughout the years. I have been told time and time again by Jani that it's not just because we are friends but that the fans of him deserve the full sound and great vocals! He's right, you do. In short, he has taken very good care of me. Because of him I have shared the stage with some great bands like: Whitesnake, Winger, Slaughter, Guns-N-Roses, Quiet Riot, Bang Tango, Firehouse, House of Lords, Ratt, Dokken, and many others. When Jani made the split from Warrant, I stayed with him and always will. I still have hopes and aspirations that there could be a reunion of some type in the future; it would be great for the fans but that is all up to Jani and the rest of the original members. Well that is the short and sweet connection with me to Warrant and Jani Lane. As you can see, I owe him a lot? Man, 16 years have gone by so quickly! At what age did you start playing the keyboard, and who inspired you musically growing up? I started very early on the piano, a prodigy. Probably around 5-6 years old. I was playing in front of huge crowds by the age of 8-9 years old. All classical music and I couldn’t read a note. I played by ear. I still can’t read to this day. (Wish I could though.) I loved boogie woogie, and Jerry Lee Lewis was the king of it, so I copied him a lot in later years. I also had a great uncle that was extremely talented and taught me much! As I became older, Van Halen, Judas Priest, Aerosmith, Ratt, Guns and Roses all became bands that I dug. I also started to write for different bands that I was involved with at the time. You guys are kicking ass and taking names on this tour! The band is smokin man, and people are really digging it. What's been a couple of your favorite stops on this tour so far? I loved Pittsburgh and Waterford Michigan! Great responses at all the shows though. Some of my favorites always tend to be the acoustic shows with just Jani, Dario and myself. They are so personal, and Jani tends to pull some old stuff out of the closet that people will rarely hear otherwise. Vocally he and I really click during the acoustic shows. I think because they are right out there in your face, ya know? What's a couple of your favorite songs to play live every night? I like "AYM," and "Machine Gun." The ballads are also among my favorites. I really like it when we get “Blind Faith” in. "Mr. Rainmaker" is awesome when Jani and I are on too. We killed it in Pittsburgh; really nailed it! I am sending a picture along with us in Pittsburgh hitting a few of the notes that are way up in the stratosphere man. The people in the town saw the best. You know, you were there Doobie! You and Jani are the older guys in the group. What's it like playing and touring with these talented young musicians? Ohhh... the kids are smokin! I am having a good time watching them get off. It's so new for them, and I can remember all those highs that they are feeling now. Fun too, because in a way Jani and I re-live things through them. I also have an in when they hit it big; I’m assured a spot on their tour bus when I’m carrying the oxygen tanks around….lol. We really do have that agreement. Wish you wouldn’t have asked that, I’m pretty sure that I have fooled many of the people on the road with my age so far (grin) Truthfully, I really think I’m aging well. I just refuse to let myself go. See for yourself, I keep recent pictures up and there really isn’t that big a change other than the hair, thank you lord!

What do you do Shawn when you aren't touring with Jani? Do you have another band you play with? When I am not touring I am GOLFING! I carry a 5 handicap right now, and you must play a lot, and well to do that. I am literally out 6 days a week, for real. I also have many golf shots posted on myspace from the Warrant days. Jani, Erik, Jerry and I spent an entire summer golfing at the finest courses in the nation one year when out with Whitesnake, Winger and Slaughter. All the guys in the band are actually really good players. There isn’t a band with a better foursome, FACT! During the winter months I teach middle school technology classes and coach 8th grade girls basketball. I keep busy. Again, probably a good reason for aging gracefully. I love those jobs as much as music. The kids are GREAT! Since becoming a coach, my teams have won 2 titles in 5 years, losing only 4 games. It is a great sports school. I am so glad that I have that when the music is gone. Right now, I am on top of the w orld with all three. I am blessed, no doubt about it. I do have some other bands that I work with and some other cd’s that I have been a part of. Slammin Gladys is a great cd that Jani produced years back, if you own it you know what I mean. The album smokes with incredible vocals and great song writing. Dave Brooks also put out a solo album with some really melodic tunes that I worked on with him. I post a few songs from time to time on myspace. The Demarco bros…Johnny and Fred! Another band that I jammed with and still will in the future. Some of the best guitar work you will ever hear! Dave Brooks and I worked on some of their stuff, you have to check Johnny out on myspace.. we all did the song “charity” together. Johnny- www.myspace.com/johnnydemarco
I also had another band that I worked with in the past that is still very dear to me. Much of my early writing was done with this band, and I have hopes that we actually might work together again in the near future. Some bad blood has to be mended first. I guess this interview is a good place to try and send a shout out to Mark Matthews. We used to be good friends and now we don’t speak? Tony Artino and Nick Lepar are also two smoking musicians in the band Defcon. Those of you who got one of the first 100 copies of the cd through Retrospect Records have a song that I wrote and sang with Mark called “One Last Time.” Management that works with Jani and I now have actually had serious interests in getting this band back together for live shows because the music is so good. I will also post a few of those songs from time to time on myspace. I am really glad you asked this question Doobie because it gives me a way and reason to try and touch base with Mark and the other guys again, thanks! Anything you'd like to say to all of the fans of this great band Shawn? We owe the fans everything! Without you we are nothing. Be careful what you read, so much of it is crap. This past year has cost the band plenty because of some really bad press. Try to get your news from the source. Jani and the rest of the band are very accessible through the internet! We all have a music myspace and respond to everyone. It really is us and not some publicist. Everyone has there demons to deal with and I certainly would never be the one to kick someone while they are down. I will be the positive one lending a hand. I wish there were more out there like that. The fans that have been coming out are awesome, and we have not disappointed them. Thank You! Here are links to everyone’s myspace websites in the band…Use them, we love to meet you all! Daniel Conway (D.C.)-Drums D.C., how did you get the Jani Lane gig, and what were you doing before? That's sort of a long story, so I'm gonna slightly abridge it...here goes: Dario and I have known each other/known of each other for quite some time, and we have had a musical project or two together at one point or another, but I had been fronting a band for a couple years, and that dissolved, so I wanted to go back to drumming. I was sitting at home trying to figure out what my next move was, and Dario's camp called me up and said they could probably get me an audition. So one thing led to another, I did a video audition, and the next week I was playing in Colorado with Jani.
Dude, you're twenty-years old, and out touring with Jani Lane, how's that make you feel? Absolutely amazing! And the fact that I'm doing it with a very close friend of mine and a few other dudes that have become close friends of mine...it's awesome!
Jani is a drummer as well, has he shown you any of his tricks yet, and why do you suppose he calls you D-Animal? Well, I've heard that he is a slammin' drummer, but he hasn't showed me anything yet...I'm hoping to see what he can do though...I love watching other drummers. D. Animal actually stems from Danimal, which is a nickname that was given to me at my church by Greg Gonzalez, who is one of my favorite bassists to play with, and also a good friend of mine. I think one night during my solo, our keyboard player Shawn commented about me to Jani or Dario and called me D-Animal, and it was one of those happy mistakes that just kinda makes sense and sticks.
What do you love the most about touring and playing live D.C.? Well of course I love being on the road playing music, but one of my favorite things ever (besides the music) is when someone from home calls me to say whats up, and they ask "So where are you?" and I tell them I have no idea. I love the feeling of not knowing where I am. I also love hanging out with the guys in the band...like I said earlier, they're all some of the raddest dudes I've ever met.
What's been a couple of your favorite stops on this tour so far? Colorado was awesome because it was my first show, but dude, I loved Pittsburgh Pennsylvania...the weather there was awesome!
What do you like for music? Name a few of your favorite bands. In no particular order, here are some of my favorites: Sunny Day Real Estate Foo Fighters Thursday Thrice Rush Dream Theater Ludwig Von Beethoven Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart The Mars Volta The Police Led Zeppelin The Beatles Jani Lane/Warrant (Gotta love the music you're playing!) and last but actually most important: PINK FLOYD is my favorite band of all time.
Anything you'd like to say to all of the fans of this amazing band? Thank you for being so awesome and energetic at shows, it's your energy that helps us put on a great show! And thank you for being so welcoming of the new kid. www.myspace.com/danimalelectro Chad Macdonald-Bass Chad, what were you doing before the Jani Lane gig, and how long have you been playing with Jani now? I have been playing with Jani for approximately 1 and 1/2 years. I did a tour with him and my friend from home, (Connecticut) Alex Grossi on guitar. Alex introduced me to Jani. I relocated to Phoenix three-years ago for a new and better music scene... I found it! When I'm not touring, I play with some great guys in Arizona, and I freelance with whatever opportunity presents itself, and that appeals to me.. I just love playing and tha'ts when I'm happiest.
How's it feel to be playing with Jani Lane every night, and the rest of this amazing line-up? It's extraordinary! Not just because its Jani Lane, but because we all get along so well, and respect each other, and each others talents on and offstage. In fact, one of the reasons our shows are so much fun is because we take all of our experiences with us to the stage. All the crazy and memorable stuff you go through together when you're touring brings a band together..musically of course, but also in an intangible way. The way that makes you smile for no reason when you are up there playing music with your amigos. And we have the privilege of playing some great rock n' roll songs that Jani has written. I'm all about the songs, and we are playing KILLER songs! You seriously are the best dressed bass guitarist in the world! Aside from that, you're a great player as well, at what age did you start playing, and who inspired you the most to play music growing up? Thank you for the compliments Doobie! The way I dress is part thrift shop, being random, and part me wanting to be Tom Petersson! (Cheap Trick bassist) Thanks for noticing. I started playing when I was already older than Dario!! (Laughs) I think I was like seventeen, and it happened quite by accident. Friends started a garage band and I was there one day to take photos I think, and a bass was literally placed in my hands and I was shown how to play on the spot. In fact, I still play today with many of the same instincts I developed that day. Play from your gut and your heart ,not your brain. I always enjoyed Bass players, because they're often the unsung members of rock n' roll bands... what I like to refer to as the " Secret Weapon." A great player that really motivated me is an underated and seldom talked about Bassist named Mike Mesaros from THE SMITHEREENS. He's still one of my favorites, but I admire so many, and they all have some influence on me. A partial list is on my Myspace profile. Check it out at www.myspace.com/chadrock2099
What's been a couple of your favorite stops on this tour so far? Well, the show I met you at, Bridgeville PA was exceptional! The stars were in alignment for us that night, but all the shows have all had their great qualities. I always enjoy getting a vibe from the towns and the venues, and indeed the audiences themselves. I'm happy to play just about anywhere, and fortunate enough to be doing it with a great bunch of guys, and playing to receptive crowds, and loyal fans of Jani's!
What's a couple of your favorite songs to play live every night? We all love "Machine Gun," and often soundcheck with it because when we're really locking in, you can hang in that song's nasty groove forever. I can really grind into the strings w/ the pixotica picks( www.pixoticapicks.com) I use because they are made of exotic hardwood(s) and give just the "BITE" I need for that tune, and the body of that track is a deceptively clever 12 bar blues for the musicians out there!...Songwise my favorite is "Mr. Rainmaker," and it's a blast to play, because it's such a strong song! In fact I think it's the best song Jani has written with Warrant, but there's so many I enjoy....and we look forward to expanding the setlists, and digging deep into the Warrant stuff for the hardcore fans. . Anything you'd like to say to all of the fans of this amazing band Chad? Yes! It means a lot to me that people are so receptive to what we are doing, and so loyal to Jani and his music. We hang after every show that we can, and none of us are to cool or too busy to say hello! We couldn't do what we do if the fans didnt come, and I dont take that lightly. The fans are especially supportive of Dario and DC and with GOOD REASON! These guys are world class. And even though I'm in the band, I'm a Jani Lane fan as well. www.myspace.com/rockerchad www.chadmacdonald.com
Dario Lorina - Guitar Dario, How does it feel to be out touring with Jani Lane, and what are some things you are learning from this experience? It feels great to be out touring with Jani. Jani is a great guy, and I have a blast playing with him every night. I'm learning how much fun it is to be on the road. Getting to see all the places we've visited at such a young age is awesome! I really enjoy traveling and playing night after night. To me it's not work, it's play!
You have grown up listening to Warrant and Jani Lane, and have been a fan of the music as well. What's going through your mind when Jani runs out on stage, and starts ripping into the set with you playing lead, and the crowd going crazy? What are you thinking about? Yes, I grew up with bands like Warrant, Skid Row, Van Halen, Lynch Mob, Ozzy, etc... in the tape player. ( I didn't get a cd player until I was about 12! ) (Laughs) The first show I played with Jani in Long Island, NY, I was in awe! I've listened to Jani on the radio, on tapes, saw Warrant on TV, and I couldn't believe I was playing the songs with somebody I really looked up to. Playing a show with a crowd who reacts and knows the words to all of the songs is incredible, and I can't imagine how it must feel for Jani, because he wrote them. I feel proud to share the stage with him!
Do you find that some people seem to forget that your only sixteen-years old, and try to offer you drinks and stuff? What are your thoughts on that? Yes. I've been offered drugs and alcohol from people in the clubs, and they probably do forget my age, but I want No part of it. I know many teenagers who would jump on the opportunity, but that's just not me. It never has been, and never will be.
What's been a couple of your favorite stops on this tour so far? Definitely Hartford, CT, because a lot of my family came to the show. Pittsburgh, PA was awesome, because the crowd was incredible! And Florida, because of how beautiful it is, right on the beaches.
What are your thoughts on maybe doing some writing with Jani in the future? That will be happening very soon, and Jani and I are excited to get started. It will be an honor to get to write with such an acclaimed song writer.
I understand that after the Jani gig, you have some plans of putting together a band of your own, mind telling us a little about that, and who else is involved? Yes. I'll be working with the drummer of Jani's band, D.C., a good friend of mine who I've known for a few years now. It will be like a Guns N' Roses meets today, or a Lynch Mob meets today. Word should be out about the band very soon.
Dario, what is your vision for the future? Where do you want to be in say ten years? I'd like to be known as a player, and have my original project established. My vision is to play hard and do my best. Hopefully People will respect what I'm trying to do by bringing back some of the 80's influence, but adding a new kick to it of course.
What would you like to say to all of the fans of this amazing band Dario? Thanks for all your support! It really does mean alot, and helps out when you're not having such a good day. I appreciate everybody who has made it to a show. Please visit me on Myspace at www.myspace.com/dariolorina , AND My website www.dariolorina.com Thanks Doobie!
Well, there you have it! Jani Lane's Warrant! I'd like to say in closing, that all four of these guys are great musicians, and great guys as well. If you haven't seen this band, and they are coming to your area, GET OUT THERE AND CHECK EM' OUT! You won't regret it!
