Blasdell, NY- Screw superstition. Friday the 13th is always a lucky day for me, and this one was no exception. Phil Lewis and his fellow black-haired cats strutted into town once again to deliver a mainline shot to the arm of glam rock goodness.
Taking the stage before a modest crowd was Phil Lewis on vocals, Stacey Blades on Guitar, Steve Riley on drums and performing his second gig with the band, bassist Scott Griffin. (Scott replaces 3-year veteran Adam Hamilton who has committed himself solely to session work.) We wish Adam well in his endeavors, however Scott seems to have stepped right in as band member number 32, or is it up to 33 now? I lose track, forgive me.
All of the Guns fan favorites were covered, “Ballad of Jayne”, “Over the Edge”, “Never Enough”, “Electric Gypsy”, “Sex Action” and “Rip and Tear.” However, we were also treated to a couple new tunes off of Tales from the Strip that included the hip-shaking groove of “Gypsy Soul” and “It Don’t Mean Nothin’.”
“Rock and Roll Outlaw” that appears on “LA Guns Rips the Covers Off” was also a nice addition to the set. Now if we can just get them to do “Man in the Moon” live, I could die happy.
Post-show festivities featured conversation, cold pizza and beer, and couple of wild & crazy Guns devotees from Akron, OH, Cheryl and Bill or was it Jim? I can’t recall, as everyone’s attention was focused on Cheryl as she proudly displayed her nipple pierced tah-tah’s for everyone’s critiquing.

Nevertheless, I got to talk with Stacey for a bit about the L.A. Guns controversy involving Paul Black & Tracii Guns. It seems this is turning into quite the rock ‘n roll feud (as is the current Faster Pussycat reunion). Fans, as well as concert promoters, according to Stacey, are being “dupped” into thinking they are getting one thing, only to find out after the fact, that something is slightly amiss…WRONG frontman! This is causing confusion and a cluster f—k of sorts (among other things). It appears neither Tracii nor Phil is intent on giving up The LA Guns name or touring under any other alternate.
We talked about a similar issue going on in the Faster Pussycat camp. Original members, Brent Muscat, Eric Stacy and Brent Bradshaw are hitting the road minus Taime Down this summer, to celebrate the band’s 20-year anniversary. While Taime is set on a more industrial-goth path, Brent, Brad and Eric feel an old school approach is a more proper dedication to their fans. In fact, Stacey mentioned a possible tour featuring the “REAL” LA Guns and Faster Pussycat may be in the works.
Finally, in addition to his supporting role as Johnny Cochran in the LAG vs LAG dispute, Stacey’s other task is too keep the pre-gig “mood enhancers” out of Phil’s reach so he doesn’t f--k up the words to “Never Enough.” You’re the man, Blades, we are counting on you. Like smoke through the hookah pipe… these are the Day of Our Lives. Stay tuned…
