Joe Perry Harper’s Ferry Boston MA May 2, 2005 By Deb Rao
Boston MA-Guitar legend Joe Perry played to a sold-out crowd at the Harpers's Ferry in Boston, MA and thanks to Joe's management company, we were there!!! Boston rolled out the red carpet in true Hollywood style Monday night for the CD release show and party for Joe Perry’s new self-titled solo CD. Word of a special intimate club appearance by Joe Perry at Harper's Ferry was announced late last Wednesday night when Boston radio station WAAF broke the news. The highly anticipated show caused pandemonium as fans tried to get tickets for the event Thursday morning. The show sold out in five minutes. When asked why he wanted to play the Harpers Ferry, Perry stated, "This is where it all started for me. We use to play six blocks down the street. So I thought it would be appropriate to play here.”
When arriving at the Harper's Ferry, I ran into my old friend Charlie Farren, who once fronted the Joe Perry Project in the early 80's. In addition, many Boston rockers were in the house on this night, including Peter Wolf of the J.Geils band and yes- Steven Tyler the other toxic twin was there as well.
Perry hit the stage at 9:10 pm. and performed the entire CD with a few surprises thrown in. He opened the show with the first single from the CD, the blues-based "Shakin the Cage."
Perry and his band were in fine form and sounded amazing. The savvy guitar legend was captivating, soft spoken and simply amazing to watch in the intimate club setting. Next up the band played and rowdy and rocking version of "Can't Compare." One of the surprises of the evening was the Woody Guthrie song, "Vigilante Man." Perry stated before the song,” This song actually started out as a folk song and it has never been done like this before." Perry had done justice to this classic by adding his special magic touch and making it his own. Another highlight of the evening was the remake of the Doors song, "Crystal Ship." It was quite fascinating to hear Perry nail every little nuance in this song. He really did sound a lot like Jim Morrison. Scary. Then the faster paced "Bright Light Fright" followed. This song featured some intense and wild guitar antics. Just like back in the go old hazy days of Aerosmith.
The Joe Perry band featured Paul Caruso on drums from the Boston based band The Atlantics. Caruso also co-produced the CD and played drums. Through-out the evening, it was cool to hear how Joe incorporated many sounds and styles of older Boston based bands into his new material. You could hear The Atlantics, The Lyres, and The Real Kids, in many of the new songs. Also you could hear a definite Jeff Beck and the Yardbirds influence.
One of the surprises of the evening was when Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler took the stage and joined Perry on the song "Talk Talking." This was a moment that I will never forget. OUTSTANDING! After that song, Perry slowed thing down a bit and played the beautiful ballad that he wrote for his wife for their ten year anniversary. The song is entitled “Roman” and this was quite a touching and emotional moment. Perry and band then finished the set the same way that they started, by playing “Shakin’ My Cage." This was for the fans who missed it earlier.
On this night Perry and band Let The Music do the Talking. It was a night that I remember forever. I strongly advise all fans of hard rock music to go out and buy Perry’s new release. The CD is hotter than a bottle of Perry’s signature brand hot sauce.
Also taking place this week to promote the Joe Perry CD is a special performance at the Webster Hall on May 5 in New York and an appearance on Rockline on May 9. more info www.joeperrymusic.com
