Hookers n' Blow The Lucky Dog Worcester MA Sept 10, 2004 Debbie Rao review and photos
Hookers"n"Blow featuring Dizzy Reed from GNR rolled in the Lucky Dog last night in Worcester and partied all night long in true Hookers"n"Blow fashion! What better way to spend your birthday than with the best party band around Hookers'n'Blow. The band hit the stage at midnight and proceeded to rock the house down with their classic renditions of 70' and 80's hit songs. Dizzy was in total command of the audience, opening with the GNR tune" It’s So Easy." Next up guitarist Matt Starr sang "Mama Kin." You may know Matt, from Bang Tango, Beautiful Creatures, and his own band Fastmaster. He has a twelve song CD out, which is available at www.fastmaster.net and is one of the busiest working musicians in Hollywood today. The Rolling Stones are Dizzy's favorite band, so naturally the band played an assortment of classic Rolling Stones tunes including "Brown Sugar,” Bleed On Me," Street Fighting Man", and" Dead Flowers." The Rolling Stones once did a surprise show at the Lucky Dog in 1981, it was a warm-up gig to kick off their world tour.
After a few opening songs, Dizzy suddenly realized that the band had no set list. This made for a very spontaneous and fun evening, the way Hookers’n’Blow like it to be. Dizzy then jumped from the keyboards to play acoustic guitar. There are two new editions to Dizzy's band. Replacing guitarist Alex Grossi, on guitar is Mayuko Okai, from Hollywood, and her sis ter Tsuzumi on bass guitar from Hollywood. The two sisters added diversity to the band. Mayuko plays lead guitar with a vengeance, and played a cool guitar lick on the song "Godzilla." Alex Grossi is touring Europe with the band Ignite, and will be back in the States, for the Steven Adler tour in October. The show at the Lucky Dog was amazing. The band was energetic and entertaining. Dizzy played his heart out. I am looking forward to seeing him perform on the upcoming GNR Tour next year. Dizzy's says, "The new GNR album Chinese Democracy is amazing and Axl sounds better than ever." Axl knew what he was doing when he hired, Dizzy Reed 14 years ago to play in GNR. Dizzy is one of the best keyboards players in music today. He takes his talent to another dimension with his new band Hookers'n'Blow. Dizzy did a great acoustic version of "Knockin' on Heaven's Door," and rocked hard on the GNR song, "I Use to Love Her." He also played a cool version of the Zombie's, "Time of the Season." Jumping from guitar to the keyboards Dizzy played a mind boggling blues intro. to the GNR song "Patience," He really played his heart out on that song.
Hookers'N'Blow are definitely one of the more fun bands to see in concert. The band played two encores including "Cat Scratch Fever," and "Saturday Is Alright for Fighting." The band returns to Boston to play Northeastern University Oct 21. For further tour dates checkout www.dizzyreed.com and stay tuned to Glam-metal for upcoming GNR Updates.
Dizzy Reed Hard Rock Cafe in Boston June 4 by Debby Rao
Rock legend Dizzy Reed, rocked the house down at his pre-birthday bash last night at the Hard Rock Cafe in Boston. Dizzy's birthday may be June 18, but the way everyone was partying and having a good time, you would think it was tonight. Dizzy Reed and his band Hookers-N-Blow played until closing and the fans still wanted more. The band is heating up the East Coast this weekend.
Hookers-N-Blow features Dizzy Reed on guitar, vocals, and keyboards, Alex Grossi and Matt Starr from Beautiful Creatures on guitar, Troy Patrick Farrell on drums, and Curtis Longfellow on bass.
The band hit the stage at 11:30pm with the song "Easy". Then next up, Matt Starr singing "Mama Kin". Matt has an incredible voice and it was fun to see him playing guitar and singing out front, instead of being hid behind his drums. Matt also sang "Surrender" by Cheap Trick and looked so cute sporting his new age black army dress and sneakers. Dizzy played a lot of classic rock songs including "Time of the Season", "Strutter" and "Ziggy Stardust." Dizzy Reed tickled the ivories with his amazing keyboard and piano playing. He has been in GNR for 14 years. Dizzy says," Axl Rose said way back that he was going to add a keyboard player and he it would be him." After last night’s performance, Dizzy proved he is one of the best keyboard players in music today. Dizzy played a lot of his favorite early Stones tunes including, "Brown Sugar", "Dead Flowers", and encore "Sympathy for the Devil." The band also played Grand Funk Railroad's song, "Were an American Band."
Dizzy toasted the audience in his pre- birthday bash, and asked" Any Red Sox fans in the house? I'm from Chicago and feel your pain." I thought that was so cool! The HardRock staff kept giving the band free drinks all night long!
By that time it was 1Am, and Hookers-N-Blow were still going strong. Dizzy yells,”I feel like playing all night." The band then sang "Saturday Is Alright for Fighting." Dizzy played guitar on a few songs including "Knockin' on Heaven's Door." They ended the show with "Sympathy for the Devil."
Dizzy Reed and Hookers-N-Blow will be performing June 5 at Jarrods in Attleboro, Ma, June 6 at the Webster Theater in Hartford, Ct and June 18(Dizzy’s real birthdayparty) at Johnny Foxx's in W. LA.
