Toronto, Ont-The Heaven and Hell, featuring the members of the 1980-82 Black Sabbath line-up, rocked Toronto, Ont last Thursday night. The band is currently on tour playing mostly Canadian hockey arenas (one N.Y.C. date thrown) on it’s first leg of their 2007 tour in support of their new CD coming out April 3rd called: Black Sabbath –The Dio years.
Megadeth opened the show and had a fantastic backdrop of their new CD called United Abominations. They opened with the track “Sleepwalker”. I thought the band looked and sounded great! Dave Mustaine, the band’s front man who originated Megadeth, had total control of the younger crowd that seemed to be more prevalent during their set than the headliners; Heaven and Hell. I was actually surprised by the influx of the younger crowd for a show that had two bands that have been around longer than they have been alive. Megadeth also ripped through other songs that included “Wake up Dead”, “Washington is Next”, and “Peace Sells.” A great short (too short perhaps) opening set for Megadeth.

Heaven and Hell took the stage to a very packed A.C.C. crowd at approx 9:15pm and playe d to 11:00pm. They had an awesome stage setup that looked like the outside of a castle with the big doors and small monitors in shapes of tombstones. I must admit that this may have been the coolest stage set up I have seen in years. Something new and different but fit very well with the theme of what Heaven and Hell was trying to do. Guitar legend Tony Iommi first walked on stage by himself and played the opening rifts of “E5150”. The rest of the band then came out to join him and they were all very impressive from the start. The entire band impressed me especially Ronnie James Dio’s vocals and Vinnie Appice’s drumming. I was totally blown away by the performances of these two. The entire band was “precision of power” playing their parts to the T without overdoing at all. Humble and precise with no frills type of attitude that kicked your ass from beginning to the end I would describe this show as. I especially liked the new song “The Devil Cried”. In addition, the lights were spectacular all throughout the show. At times, the spotlights shined beneath Dio and above him to give that “Heaven and Hell” retrospective. If this tour comes to your town and you miss it, then you may be missing the tour of 2007!!!
