Rock guitar virtuoso George Lynch took a break from his opening slot on the Yngwie Malmsteen tour to play a headlining club show in the Buffalo NY area. An audience of approximately 150 witnessed a great display of musicianship and heard a set list that consisted of a good mix of material from Lynch’s former band Dokken and Lynch Mob plus a few cool covers. The backing band that Lynch has assembled for this tour is top notch and may be his best solo outfit ever. The group is comprised of Kelly Keeling on vocals, Jeff Martin on drums and Marten Anderson on bass. Throughout his solo career, Lynch has been plagued by his inability to find a suitable vocalist. This is no longer true. Excluding Don Dokken, new vocalist Kelly Keeling is the most dynamic and talented singer to ever perform in a band with Lynch. Keeling has worked in the past with Michael Schenker and co-wrote many songs with Don Dokken for the new Dokken Cd “Hell to Pay” and for last years “Long Way Home.” The show commenced at approximately 11pm as smoke filled the stage and Lynch entered with his vintage trade-mark tiger-striped guitar. Lynch looked like he was in the best shape of his life. The other three band members then appeared and then tore into a highly energetic version of the Dokken classic “Unchain the Night” Also performed from the Dokken catalog during the evening were “Tooth and Nail,” “Breaking the Chains” and an incredible solo version of the classic Lynch composed instrumental “Mr. Scary.” The ZZ Top gem "Precious and Grace" was also a set highlight and a studio version of this track will appear on the upcoming Lynch release ‘Furious George’ For the melodic and dynamic “Million Years” Keeling strapped on a 12 string guitar and Lynch added great vocal harmonies along with some tasteful and impressive guitar work.
All in all it was a great night of music on a dreary, dismal rainy night. Let’s just hope that Lynch brings this line-up into the recording studio soon and records the CD that we have all been waiting for. www.georgelynch.com
