Maybe the most pleasant surprise of the summer was the performance of Foreigner at the Seneca Niagara Casino. The band is still called Foreigner, which is debatable because only one original member, Guitarist Mick Jones is in the band. But, whatever they’re called, this band is still worth checking out. Foreigner now consists of Kelly Hansen (formerly of Hurricane) on vocals, Jeff Pilson (Dokken) on bass, Jason Bonham on drums, Tom Gimbel on rhythm guitar /saxophone, Jeff Jacobs on keyboards and of course founder and guitarist Mick Jones.

The band started at 8pm sharp and kicked into “Double Vision,” a great track to get the crowd rolling. During the third song “Cold as Ice,” singer Kelly Hanson climbed a scaffold on the side of the stage to get the crowd riled up. In my experience crowds at this place are reluctant to rock out for some reason, but Kelly’s stage antics definitely started to at least light a fire under them. About halfway through the set, some fans were standing in front of the stage and getting more into it. Remember, the more the fans are into it, the more the band gets into it. Otherwise they may as well be doing a sound check. Another cool moment is when the entire band came out to the end of the stage with Mick on acoustic guitar and Jason banging on the tambourine singing “Say You Will.” The harmonies were great and gave the crowd a little interaction with the entire band. During “Starrider,” Mick took the lead with the acoustic guitar and the rest of the band joining in. Tom Gimbel brought the sax out during “Urgent” and that’s where I think the crowd started to stand up more and move a little towards the front. Jason Also during “Urgent,” Jason did a drum medley of his late father’s band “Led Zeppelin.”
