It’s a rare occurrence when the Metal Queen Doro Pesch tours North America. Right now she is in the midst of a 19 city tour that will take her through the United States and parts of Canada. We at Glammetal were very privileged to take in the Toronto show at the Funhaus Club. The club was on the 2nd floor with almost no ventilation to speak of (except some fans going). This show made for a hot, sticky, sweaty audience that Metal fans seem to thrive the best in. I think you can say the same for the Metal Queen herself.
Totally decked out in her traditional leather, Doro took the stage at around 11:00pm to a small but raucous crowd. She opened up with “Earthshaker Rock.” The band also consisted of multi talented guitarist Chris Caffrey (who is also opening the show with his solo band), bassist Nick Douglas, drummer Johnny Dee, and keyboardist/guitarist Oliver Palotai. Doro looked and sounded fantastic as she ran through her hits “Rule the Ruins,” “Strangers Yesterday,” and “Fur Immur.” The band sounded great and were very personable with the crowd especially Nick who screamed “I love my job” when being introduced! Doro also covered her former band Warlock as well. She did “Burning the Witches,” “True as Steel,” and of course the classic “All We Are.” She did a really cool version of the Judas Priest classic “Breaking the Law.” The first part of the song was very slow and melodic. She then turned it up, kicked into it and the crowd went nuts. We were lucky enough to interview Doro before the show and we talked about her relationship with a former producer of hers, Gene Simmons. Before the song “Unholy Love,” she mentioned that how she was talking about Kiss before the show and her fondness of Gene. She dedicated the song to him. This song was in a bunch of encores that brought the show almost till 1:00am. What a fantastic show! Doro gave her fans their moneys worth and then some!!
After the show, Doro spent lots of time with each individual fan by taking pictures and signing autographs. I have met numerous musicians, been backstage at many events and I have to say this; I have never met or seen a more fan oriented musician in my life than Doro. She wasn’t kidding when she said she spends lots of time after each show with her fans. It was almost 2am when my associate and I left the Funhaus and she still had at least 20 or so people to meet with. I know Doro probably stayed till each fan was taking care of. Want to thank Shanna and Carol at Kayos Productions for allowing Glammetal to cover the show. Also, want to thank Johnny Dee who is acting Tour Manger in addition to his drumming duties. He was very conscious in making sure we were taking care of. Stay tuned for a long in depth interview with Doro that hopefully will be posted by the end of the week.
